About the project
The Wellington Chinese Garden Society (WCGS) is contributing $1m towards the construction of the Garden but will seek to raise more. The original budgeted cost for the garden was $6.5m.
The Wellington City Council (WCC) refreshed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with our sister city, Xiamen (厦门市 xìa mén shì), in 2023 reaffirming its commitment to build the garden.
The WCC is funding all ‘below ground’ works and ‘above ground’ works for the garden will be funded through China relationship contributions of materials and fundraising in New Zealand.
The Garden has been through resource consent but the wider plan for Frank Kitts Park (including the garden) will need to be reconsented due to the demolition of the Underground carpark (next to the Lagoon). The new consent will focus on the carpark and is due to be completed mid 2025.
